Frequently asked questions about online spyware scanner:

Is Spyware Scanner safe?
Yes. This scanner will not modify or remove any data or files from your computer. It was designed only to run a quick sweep of your system and report back any known spyware files to you.
Why does Spyware Scanner only work for Internet Explorer users?
ActiveX controls are only compatible with users of IE4.0 and above.
How much does this scan cost?
Nothing! Spyware Scanner is offered to the public for free to help raise awareness of the threat posed by spyware, adware, trojans and the many other types of malicious software that are present on the Internet.
What harm can spyware do to my computer?
Many types of spyware are little more than annoyances, using up your computer's memory resources, making it run slower, or constantly triggering pop-up ads, even when you're not online. Other more malicious forms can be used to steal passwords and other confidential information, track your Internet activity and allow someone to control your computer remotely. These more malicious types of spyware make themselves very hard to remove, and can even break your Internet connection when deleted.
I have an anti-virus program running on my computer - am I not already protected against spyware?
Unfortunately, no. Spyware is able to slip past most firewall and anti-virus programs. To be completely protected, you need a program that is able to detect unauthorized spyware activity as well as recognize known spyware files present in your system.

Troubleshooting

How do I allow ActiveX to work in Internet Explorer?
Please take the following steps to configure your settings:

       1. In the top browser menu, click Tools > Internet Options
       2. Go to the 'Security' tab and select the globe icon (the Internet Zone)
       3. Select 'Custom Level' and go to the section marked 'ActiveX Controls and Plug-Ins'
       4. Under where it says 'Download signed ActiveX', click 'Prompt'
       5. Select 'Enable' under the 'Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-Ins' heading
       6. Click 'Enable' under the 'Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting' heading
       7. Click OK to close the Security Settings window, and then OK again to close Internet Options. If you are asked to verify that you want to change the settings for the Internet zone, simply click 'Yes'.

Nothing happens when I click the screen to get a free scan. What happened?
Here are some tips as to finding and resolving this problem:

        * Check that your Internet connection is functioning properly
        * Confirm that you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later
        * Ensure that the Internet security level is not set to 'High'
        * Make sure you click 'Yes' in response to any security alerts that appear
        * The amount of time it takes for the Spyware Scanner to appear depends on your connection speed. This should only happen with your first scan. Subsequent scans will be faster.

My firewall is preventing the ActiveX download
Some firewalls are configured to reject any ActiveX downloads automatically. Please adjust your firewall settings to enable Spyware Scanner to download.
